Every creative agency has heard it from developers. "That animation will kill performance." And every dev team has heard it from designers. "If we compress that image, it will look terrible." Both sides are usually wrong. Because they are both solving the wrong problem.
At Emperor, we set performance targets before design begins, not after. A page score of 90 or above on Lighthouse is a design rule, just like "the brand colours are navy and gold." It shapes decisions from the first wireframe.
This changes how everything gets built. Instead of a designer creating a 12MB hero video that an engineer has to argue about later, the brief says something like: hero section, maximum 200KB, must load in under 1.5 seconds on a normal mobile connection. The designer solves for that. The results are usually more creative, not less.
Every website we ship scores 90 or above on Core Web Vitals in production. Not in a lab test on a fast machine. In production, on real infrastructure, with a real CDN.
Beauty and performance are not opposites. They both come down to the same thing. Knowing exactly what you are doing and why. See our work.
