Key Points
- Performance is a design decision, not just a development one. Heavy animations and large images are design choices.
- The best-performing websites are designed mobile-first, then scaled up to desktop.
- Every design element should earn its place. If it does not serve the user, it is slowing the page down.
- Lazy loading, image optimization, and font subsetting are standard practice in performance-focused design.
- Design for performance means making something fast and beautiful at the same time, not choosing between them.
The False Trade-Off
Every creative agency has heard it from developers. "That animation will kill performance." And every dev team has heard it from designers. "If we compress that image, it will look terrible." Both sides are usually wrong. Because they are both solving the wrong problem.
Performance as a Design Rule From the Start
At Emperor, we set performance targets before design begins, not after. A page score of 90 or above on Lighthouse is a design rule, just like "the brand colours are navy and gold." It shapes decisions from the first wireframe.
This changes how everything gets built. Instead of a designer creating a 12MB hero video that an engineer has to argue about later, the brief says something like: hero section, maximum 200KB, must load in under 1.5 seconds on a normal mobile connection. The designer solves for that. The results are usually more creative, not less.
How We Build Fast Without Looking Cheap
- Next.js with React Server Components. Only the interactive parts of the page send JavaScript to the browser.
- next/image with AVIF. Images that are 50 to 70 percent smaller than JPEG with no visible difference in quality.
- CSS animations over JavaScript. Where possible, transitions run on the GPU and never slow the page down.
- Animations that respect accessibility settings. Motion that responds to reduced-motion preferences is not just more accessible. It also skips unnecessary work on lower-end devices.
What That Looks Like in Production
Every website we ship scores 90 or above on Core Web Vitals in production. Not in a lab test on a fast machine. In production, on real infrastructure, with a real CDN.
Beauty and performance are not opposites. They both come down to the same thing. Knowing exactly what you are doing and why. See our work.
